Dear Dr. Watkins,

I hope this finds you well, and recovering after a hopefully great semester. I’ve wanted to reach out for some time now—you could say I’m a fan! I’ve read your book, From the Inside Out, exhaustively. It figures centrally into my recently completed dissertation, which explores intersections of voice and saxophone pedagogy. I’ve also incorporated much of it into my own pedagogical/performance practice.

For now, I just wanted to make an introduction, and share my appreciation for immense pedagogical contribution your book represents. If you’re interested in chatting more or reading my paper, I’d be happy to share that (for now, it’s embargoed in hopes of future publications in journal(s) or elsewhere). In the interest of being unduly vague, though, I’ll share that part of my thesis is that your book represents a turn towards “fact-based pedagogy” (to borrow terminology from historical voice pedagogy), analogous to voice publications in 1967 by Vennard and Appelman, thus positioning the broader field of saxophone pedagogy some fifty years behind the voice. Beyond that I analyze instances of voice pedagogy which crop up in our own through the lens of the full gamut of voice pedagogy (from Manuel Garcia II all the way through Richard Miller, Ken Bozeman, and similar figures of today).

Thanks for your time, and best wishes for an enjoyable summer.

Sincerely,

Dr. Derek Granger (he/him/his)
